The Provincial Road Master Plan(PRMP) for Gilgit-Baltistan is need of time to overcome the formidable challenges that Gilgit –Baltistan is facing. The need for the PRMP is justifiable at two levels. Firstly, at the operational level, transport in Gilgit-Baltistan is overwhelmingly roads-based and a large portion of the network is in poor condition and has become an impediment to efficient transportation. Secondly, at policy level, the Government’s development strategy has to count on a reliable transport system, as transport is a key input into overall economic activity and poverty alleviation. The PRMP will contribute to GB’s economic growth. At the same time, it will provide safeguards against adverse social and environmental impacts of transport.
ETI will provide policy formulation support to the government PRMP and operation and maintenance (O&M) Policy. The PRMP will ensure that the road network will be planned, maintained, constructed and developed to promote economic development of the region, by taking into consideration the immediate and future socio-economic development plans and policies of the Government.
